At a recent awards function, Priyanka Chopra turned emotional and expressed her regret at not being directed in any of her films by the man considered the epitome of Bollywood romance. Obviously, she was referring to Yash Chopra, who passed away in October.

Turns out Kareena Kapoor too has similar regrets, as the legendary filmmaker never passed her instructions over the microphone during a shoot. However, the actress says she's thankful to be associated with him for a completely different reason. And it has something to do with her marriage.

Kareena, who recently married Saif Ali Khan, got involved in a serious relationship with him on the sets of Tashan. The 2008 action film was produced under Chopra's banner Yash Raj Films. `It would have been an honour but the fact is I never got to work with Yashji as my director.

Fortunately, I've been in several films made by his production house. In fact, thanks to Yash Raj Films, Saif and I are together today because it was during Tashan we fell in love with each other. Were it not for that film, things could have been different today for both of us,` gushes the 32 year-old actress.

Talking about movies, Bebo admits to have not having watched a single film this year. She says, `The Dirty Picture was the last one I saw and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven't seen Barfi! either, but I've heard Ranbir and Priyanka are fantastic in it. They are both wonderful actors. It's been a busy year but then Saif and I rarely go out like other couples to catch a movie."

NEWS: 'JTHJ' in India earns Rs.60.39 crore($10mill) in four days

The magic of Yash Chopra's evergreen romance formula seems to be working again. "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" (JTHJ), his last directorial venture before his death, has earned Rs.60.39 crore at the domestic box office in four days of its release.

The Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif-starrer love story released on 2,500 screens on the auspicious occasion Diwali, Nov 13.

The film earned Rs.15.23 crore (Tuesday) Rs.19.54 crore (Wednesday), Rs.14.45 crore (Thursday) and Rs. 11.17 crore (Friday).

Produced by Aditya Chopra under the family banner Yash Raj Films, JTHJ was reportedly made at a budget of Rs.50 crore. Shot in exotic foriegn locales, the movie witnessed a good opening in the overseas market too.

The total overseas collections turned out to be $4.75 million (Rs. 26 crore). A break-up of the overseas figures - $1.30 million (Tuesday), $1.20 million (Wednesday), $1million (Thursday) and $1.25 million (Friday).

JTHJ released alongside Ajay Devgn's "Son Of Sardaar" (SOS), a comedy entertainer.

NEWS: SRK's kiss story - JTHJ demanded it!

Shah Rukh Khan had made a rule for himself - never kiss on screen, but he has made an exception for Yash Chopra's "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" (JTHJ). The superstar says he was "forced" to kiss this time, and says it was only a demand of the script.

"I had a couple of rules actually - that I won't ride a horse and I won't kiss. Both are cumbersome. I don't know how to do both on screen," Shah Rukh said at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2012 here Friday.

Ever since the release of Yash Chopra's directorial JTHJ Tuesday, social networking platforms have been abuzz about the kiss scene between Shah Rukh and Katrina Kaif. So, moderator Vir Sanghvi, on behalf of Twitterati, asked SRK: How come he kissed this time!

"I will be very honest. Adi (Aditya Chopra), Yash ji and Katrina, and I say this with all humility and thankfulness to them, that they knew I was awkward, I had issues and I am a very easy actor to work with. They are like my family and they said, 'You don't have to do this' and then they got together and they forced me and then even paid me for it."

"So... when heroines say that 'I wore a bikini because the story demanded me to', I did it (the kiss) because the story demanded it. Believe me or don't believe it," said the 47-year-old actor, who has been in showbiz for over two decades.

Shah Rukh feels doing something as intimate as a kiss on screen, is mechanical.

"It is very mechanical with 100 people telling you what to do. It's very odd. I don't even do photoshoots with heroines if it is not for my film and that is also rude, but I don't want to waste anyone's time. I find it very awkward taking my shirt off and posing. I can do it in character for film," he said.

But JTHJ was "extremely special because of Yash ji".

"He spoke to everyone and he said 'Shah Rukh, this is a requirement'," recollected Shah Rukh.

The actor was extremely close to the late filmmaker, who breathed his last Oct 21 following dengue and subsequent multi-organ failure.

"It'll be a moving museum of Yashji's work, which kind of does not end, but continues with "Jab Tak Hai Jaan". But somewhere down the line, the journey is still there," added the 46-year-old, on the sidelines of the launch of a furnishings store, Bioscopewalli

On Sunday evening tinsel town was shrouded in grief when the news of the demise of Bollywood’s favourite filmmaker broke out. The director passed away before seeing his last film hit the screens

Shahrukh Khan-Katrina Kaif-Anushka Sharma starrer Jab Tak Hai Jaan was Yash Chopra’s last directorial film. And that’s how the maker wanted it to be too. Chopra had announced already that this would be his last film because he had decided to spend some quality time with his family. The director was about to leave for Switzerland to shoot the last and final song – the title number for Jab Tak Hai Jaan – when he fell ill and was diagnosed with dengue.

Now, in the wake of the sad demise of Bollywood’s favourite filmmaker, B-town is abuzz with the speculations about who will direct this last song of JTHJ? If sources close to the Chopra household are to be believed, the song will either be shot by his son Aditya Chopra or not shot at all.

Yash Chopra's funeral to get rivals Shah Rukh Khan-Salman face to face

If sources are to be believed arch rivals Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, who invariably make headlines for taking jabs at each other, are likely to overlook their so-called mutual abhorrence and attend the death of the legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra.

Shah Rukh Khan, as reports suggest, will stay back at YRF studios till the crematorium takes place at Pawan Hans, Juhu. "Salman and his family are to pay their last respects to the filmmaker at YRF studios today. They will also visit the crematorium which further increases the likelihood of the two stars coming face to face," says a Bollywood insider. "If the funeral procession happens from YRF to crematorium, SRK will be accompanied by  Chopra's sons and Salman is expected to join the cavalcade," stated another source.

'Melody Queen' Lata Mangeshkar on Sunday condoled the death of legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, saying "he meant to a world to me".

 

"We were like a family... We were brother and sister. His wife also treats me like a sister... everybody in the family respects me so much. I have suffered a huge loss today," Mangeshkar told news channels.

 

"He has innumerable memorable songs... I am so shocked at this moment that I can't even think of any other thing... But I want to dedicate one song to my dearest friend which was also close to his heart, Tere Liye Hum Bhi Jiye from Veer Zara.

 

"The song is also close to my heart as it was was composed by my Madan Mohan, who was like a brother to me."

Aditya was inconsolable after doctors pronounced Yash Chopra dead

At 5.25 pm, when the doctors at the Intensive Cardiac Unit of Lilavati hospital pulled off the life support system after Yash Chopra breathe his last, his sons- Uday and elder brother Aditya Chopra hugged mother Pamela tightly.

"Aditya, who was very close to his father was just got inconsolable and burst into tears. Rani, who was next to Aditya cajoled him in controlling himself, asking him to take care of mother Pamela, who was completely shattered, " said a source who was present at the hospital.

The sources added, "Pam aunty was caressing Yashji's forehead, while Uday who looked haggard was seen taking phone calls, informing close relatives about his father's sad demise."

Though ist is being said that the doctors had informed the Chopras about Yashji's critical situation, but clearly nothing could've have prepared them for this blow.

Sources said that the family united together around late afternoon, praying for the filmmaker's recovery, but the organ failure worsened things, as the body stopped responding to medicine followed by an cardiac arrest around early evening.

Yash Chopra redefined romance in Hindi Film Industry

He worked with Ashok Kumar to Shah Rukh Khan and Mala Sinha to Anushka Sharma in his over five-decade glorious cinematic journey, and the title of Yash Chopra's new film, "Jab Tak Hai Jaan", summed up the ace filmmaker's philosophy - making path-breaking movies till he could.

His death Sunday came weeks before the release of "Jab Tak Hai Jaan", which he had announced would be his last directorial venture. The romantic saga is coming out Nov 13, but he will not be around to see it.

Chopra, who turned 80 Sep 27, was born in Lahore in 1932 and eventually came to Mumbai after Partition. In an interview some days before he was hospitalised with dengue, Chopra told Shah Rukh: "My mother said do what your heart says. She gave me Rs.200 and said my blessings are with you. Go ahead and don't worry."

He also said whatever he was because of his late brother and filmmaker B.R. Chopra, whom he assisted at the beginning of his Bollywood career.

"I'm sitting here just because of B.R. Chopra and no one else. I wanted to fly on my own wings," he said in that interview.

He admitted that it was not easy to start Yash Raj Films, his production house that has been delivering blockbuster hits, in 1971.

Yet, Chopra was one of the few directors to make two superhit films simultaneously - action drama "Deewar" (1975) and cross-generational romance "Kabhi Kabhie" (1976) - both proved his versatility and his hold on the pulse of audiences.

But, like all legendary directors, no one or two films can sum up Chopra's achievements.

To the world, Chopra was known as the 'King of Romance', a well-deserved title after he created memorable love stories in "Daag", "Kabhi Kabhie", "Silsila", "Chandni", "Dil To Pagal Hai", and "Veer Zaara". To keep up with evolving audiences, he adapted new trends in each era and made most glamorous and trendy romances.

Like others, he too went through a bad patch after two of his films - "Faasle" (1985) and "Vijay" (1988) - bombed one after the other at the box office.

But after facing the setbacks, Chopra triumphed again at the box office with "Chandni".

"When I was making 'Vijay', I was making films just to be successful and not from my heart and I knew I was making the wrong kind of films. I decided to make a hardcore romantic film with nine songs and this is how I thought of 'Chandni' (1989)," he had said in an interview once.

He went on to create a new-age romance for Gen Y with "Dil To Pagal Hai" (1997), a sleek, urban, musical romantic saga that reaped gold at the box office.

Then he made the cross-border romantic flick "Veer Zara" (2004) and was planing to hang up his boots after "Jab Tak Hai Jaan".

In his career, he won many awards, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001, six National Awards, 11 Filmfare Awards and was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2005.

Many of Chopra's romances used the beautiful alpine landscape of Switzerland. Chopra shot so many times in Switzerland that a lake in the Alpenrausch, a favourite shooting spot of his, has been christened Chopra Lake.

Not only that, he became the first recipient of the title of Ambassador of Interlaken, and a special Yash Chopra Suite and Yash Chopra Train were inaugurated in his honour in Interlaken in 2011.

But Chopra's oeuvre was not limited to just romance and relationships. In his five decade-long career, he experimented with all genres.

His first film "Dhool Ka Phool" in 1959 was the story of an illegitimate Hindu child being brought up by a Muslim.

His next project, "Dharamputra" (1961) was another hard-hitting film on communal conflict, and was one of the first films to depict the Partition and Hindu fundamentalism. The film marked the debut of Shashi Kapoor in a full-fledged role and won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

A precedent-setter, Chopra's 1965 critically successful drama "Waqt" pioneered the concept of multi-starters in Bollywood, while "Ittefaq" (1969) was a taut thriller, being the first Hindi films which did not have any songs or an interval.

Proving his versatility, Chopra on one hand directed intense dramas "Deewar", "Trishul", and "Mashaal", while on the other he made family sagas like "Parampara" and thrillers - "Kala Patthar" and "Darr".

His movies were sometimes based on real life tragedies. The Dec 27, 1975, accident in a coal mine in Chasnala near Dhanbad inspired the multi-starrer intense drama, "Kaala Patthar" starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and Shashi Kapoor.

Chopra was one of the few filmmakers who created a cult following for his actors -- Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi and Shah Rukh Khan - and gave audiences evergreen songs.
